Police Surveillance Cameras To Be Installed In East Jerusalem

After the Mabat 2000 camera surveillance program in the Old City of Jerusalem successfully proved itself, Jerusalem police have decided to add additional cameras in other flashpoint areas of Jerusalem.

The Mabat 2000 program has a central command office overseeing hundreds of surveillance cameras around the clock monitoring 95% of the Old City. The cameras have often helped police prevent a crime or attack, or apprehend a wanted suspect.

The new cameras will cover the Jerusalem light rail in realtime, with cameras being incorporated into traffic signals. The light rail has been the scene of dozens of terrorist attacks.

Other cameras will be added to the Arab areas of the capital including Issawiya, Wadi Joz, and Silwan, where frequent scenes of clashes and attacks have taken place between residents and security forces.
