Security cameras had showed the suspected thief, a man in his 20s wearing a kippah, making off with the scrolls although the building was locked at the time.
The case received extensive publicity when the authorities and local Jewish officials became involved and offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the Torah scrolls. The 66th Precinct to the Major Case Squad to the Brooklyn South Chief to the Commisioner’s office, were involved and spent countless hours to solve the case. Many volunteer groups and individual participated, as well.
Then on Thursday night at 1:30 a.m., a member of the synagogue participating in a late-night study session discovered four large bags placed outside of the building entrance. Upon opening them, they were found to contain the four stolen Torah scrolls.
Security camera footage showed a man double-parking his vehicle in front of the building at around 1:00AM. He calmly carried the four stolen Sifrei Torah out of his vehicle and placed them in front of the Shul before driving off into the night.
The shul was so thrilled with the return of their Torah scrolls, that they held Hakafot and sang and danced with the 4 Torah scrolls on Saturday night.
