Love and Giving – Rabbi Zamir Cohen

Many people, when asked what love is, will define it as giving, but we have to specify exactly what that means.

Love is to see the loved one happy and content, even if I have to give everything I own to make that happen! This is how someone who truly loves will feel.

A tangible example would be, obviously, the love of a parent for a child. A parent will give up anything and everything just so the child will be satisfied and happy. But a person who is downtrodden and depressed and who has no love for himself, cannot love another! And one who has not loved another person cannot possibly come to loving God.

The route of building love in one’s heart goes like this: In the beginning of a person’s life, he is self-centered and loves only himself. From there, he comes to loving his parents. From this natural love, he then climbs the ladder of human relations by loving his fellow humans, and then up to the pinnacle — loving his wife and children.

Once he has gotten there and he knows and has experienced what true love is — giving your all to the other to fulfill his needs — then he can hope to climb to loving God and to only give Him pleasure. This is why, immediately after the verse, “And you should love God your God,” it says: “With all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your means” (Deuteronomy 6:5). This is true love of God: to give up everything for Him.
