The International Basketball Association (FIBA) canceled a 20-year-old law this week that banned players from wearing religious symbols such as kippah during the games.
Originally the decision prohibiting players from wearing a skullcap, turban or other religious symbols was because of security concerns.
However, in its latest committee meeting in Hong Kong, the basketball association determined that players can wear religious symbols, provided they are in the following three colors: black, white or matching their group's uniform.
At the same time another FIBA decision made in Hong Kong is the prohibition to conceal the face or any part of it, using traditional clothing such as the hijab worn by Muslim female basketball players. Both decisions will take effect in about five months, beginning in October.
