They all went together to Ramla to Rabbi Yitzchak Abuchatzeira (who was called the Baba Chaki) and told them of their pain not having any children yet after being married 2 years. He listened carefully and then he said: “You must go to my holy brother in Netivot the Baba Sali and ask him for a blessing. But don’t forget to tell him that you are all from yeshiva Porat Yosef. The Baba Sali especially loves that Yeshiva and its students.”
That same day the continued south to Netivot and met the great Baba Sali. They told him they were from yeshiva Porat Yosef and immediately the baba Sali said: “They are all blessed!” The young married students felt like a big stone was taken off their hearts and were sure the blessing would work. Indeed within the year 9 out of the 10 young men were blessed that their wife had a baby.
But one young man didn’t yet have children and he felt terrible. He was part of the same group and for some reason the blessing of the Baba Sali didn’t help for him. He went to the Baba Chaki in Ramla and asked why the blessing of his brother worked for everyone but him. The Baba Chaki said he would ask his brother why indeed and get back to him.
A few days later the Baba Chaki paid a visit to his brother in Netivot the Baba Sali and asked him about his blessing and why it didn’t work for this young man. The Baba Sali answered that “the young man also got the same blessing as the rest of the young men but he didn’t believe it would work. They believed it would work and it did but he didn’t so it didn’t work.”
The young man who came with the Baba Chaki to visit the Baba Sali in Netivot looked at the floor with embarrassment. It was true. The moment that the Baba Sali said “They are all blessed” he had some doubts in his mind about the Baba Sali….
The Baba Sali said “I will bless you but only on the condition that you believe it will work. Otherwise it won’t work.” A year later this young man was also blessed with a child.
